The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) supports an active and widely recognized cultivar development program. Breeding programs address many of the major crops grown in the state and routinely release cultivars destined to be grown in Florida, surrounding states, or throughout the world.

This document represents the current institutional guiding principals for the processes related to cultivar development, testing, release, and commercialization. This document is intended to be a “living document”, meaning as times and situations change, the approaches outlined therein may be modified to adequately address the changing circumstances.
